The Election Commission of India has banned the screening of PM Narendra Modi biopic before Lok Sabha elections.
The Election Commission decision to ban the screening of PM Narendra Modi arrives a day before its release. The film was slated to be released on 5th April and after delays now it was to release on 11th April.
The ECI said in a statement, “Any biopic material in nature of biography sub-serving the purpose of any political entity or any individual entity connected to it, which has potential to disturb level playing field during the election, should not be displayed in electronic media, including cinematography.”
The Congress last month had moved the Election Commission to stall the release of the biopic on the grounds that it is a politically-motivated film aimed at getting extra mileage for the BJP in the Lok Sabha polls.
Earlier, there was a plea in the Supreme Court to postpone the release date but the court rejected the plea and said that the Election Commission will decide whether the movie should be released amidst elections or not.
Meanwhile, the Lok Sabha Elections 2019 is scheduled to be held in seven phases. The first phase of polling will be held on April 11 and the last phase of voting will be conducted on May 19. The results will be announced on May 23.
